LED Lenser P5R Review

The LED Lenser P5R, like the larger M7R, utilizes an optic that is a combination lens and reflector. This permits a smooth and fairly artifact-free beam that can be focused quickly in both spot and flood mode. The P5R features several operational modes and a maximum output of 200 lumens in high power. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is charged internally by a contact charger that attaches magnetically to the tail cap.

Pricing & Ordering

MSRP for the LED Lenser P5R is US$100, and the light is only available in black.

In The Box

The injection-molded carrying case contains the following: LED Lenser P5R, battery, USB magnetic charger, charger mount, 2 ea. mounting screws and drywall anchor, 1000mA AC ->USB adapter, belt clip, lanyard, and a user manual.

Battery

An ICR-14500 3.7V/700mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery is used in the LED Lenser P5R.

To charge the light, attach the magnetic charger to the tailcap. Charge time can take up to five hours.

The Light

Head
The head features a plastic total internal reflection optic.

To adjust the focus of the light, the head can be moved forward for a tighter beam or backwards for a wider beam. The focus is lockable.

Body
The light is made of type-II anodized aluminum inside and out with knurling along the entire body.

Tail Cap
On the tail cap is a momentary-capable push switch, which also doubles as charging contacts.

Operational Modes

The LED Lenser P5R features three modes, all of which are selected from OFF.

Full
A full click (or holding in the switch) will turn on the light at the maximum output of 200 lumens.

Low Power
A single tap and a full click (or holding in the switch) within one second will activate low power mode, which is 15 lumens.

Strobe
Double tap and a full click (or holding in the switch) within one second will activate the strobe at what appears to be full power.

Performance

The LED Lenser P5R is rated for up to 200 lumens with a range of 1/9 mile (623 ft/190 m).

In spot mode, the beam pattern of the P5R has multiple rings around the hotspot, which is a square. However, in flood mode, the best feature of an LED Lenser light, the beam is almost completely smooth.

With the new Speed Focus, adjustment from spot to focus is quick and can be done with one hand. Just twist the head to unlock, and slide the head back or forth.

Runtime

Accessories

The LED Lenser P5R comes with several useful accessories included in the storage case, consisting of a mounting bracket/charging station, swiveling belt clip, and lanyard.

Conclusion

During testing of the P5R, I found light sufficiently bright. Needless to say, we’re fairly impressed by the flood mode of the LED Lenser P5R. Usually we have to remove a reflector or bezel to get a flood beam, which is easier on the eyes, but the P5R’s adjustable focus makes going back to a tighter beam extremely easy.

In addition to the useful flood mode, the LED Lenser P5R includes a self-aligning magnetic charging system. This rechargeable flashlight makes a good pocket light for every-day carry.

The switch is a little firm but has good tactile response with a solid click.

I had this light PSR 103940 given to me as a present, I’ve used it two of three time and thought very highly of it, until it was hard to get to charge ( red light just flashes & doesn’t charge) now it’s been flashing for two days without success? Any ideas to reset or where to send it for repair in Montreal

When I charge my flashlight, it shows solid red meaning it’s charging, then starts flashing red and green alternately. What does this mean and what should I do.

RED & Green flashing on charging – seems to be improper contact in the Cradle – re-adjust it and OK for me – but read on and DON’t buy another !
I use my P5R daily for short spells at a time, occasionally have run it until battery ran out, all OK and delighted – but since past 6 months it has been a PAIN getting worse – that fiddly switch for gloved hands, etc but does NOT REGULARLY switch on to full power – blinks / flickers etc / goes off. fiddling with switch shows there is still power. I have been in contact with Lenser – product no longer supported – 2-3 years out of warranty. and no switch available. Hmmp – last Lenser product I will be buying – if the Battery had gone, or maybe LED, I’d have got a replacement …but now ? Going to back to Chinese disposable/ 1-Way trippers. Shame on these companies – charging so much – all HYPE and marketing IMHO.
